Pinocchio
Hindustani Play
Godrej Dance Theatre
Sunday, 15th July – 12.00 pm

An NCPA Presentation

One of the powerful mediums that spawn holistically-endowed beings is theatre. Enriched with stories, music, narratives, dialogues and powerful acting, theatre can open up impressionable young minds to ideas and concepts they would probably never have dreamed of. Wanting to expose children to this efficacious medium, the NCPA has begun 'SundayMornings at NCPA', an endeavour that showcases a children's play every month.

Pinocchio has been adapted in almost every language all over the world. But it was never done in Hindustani. Pinocchio that will be staged at the NCPA on 15 July 2018, has been adapted to Hindutani by Gulzar Saab as a musical, based on the story of a puppet that comes alive. Geppeto the poor woodcarver carves himself a puppet out of a block of wood. A turquoise-haired Fairy takes pity on the old man and brings the puppet to life. Pinocchio wants to be a real boy, but the fairy puts Jiminy, the cricket as his conscience. He is the adviser Pinocchio needs to consult before deciding anything. Pinocchio is advised against telling lies and informed that his nose would increase each time he utters a lie.

Going his own way, ignoring the advice of his father, the fairy, and his conscience, Pinocchio soon falls in with a variety of bad company, including a fox and a cat that leads to grief and misery. What follows is the repentance of Pinocchio that leads to his absorption as a human being in the community of Geppeto.

Malayalam Play (2 hours)
TATA Theatre
Saturday, 28th July at 7 PM

An NCPA Presentation

Nona is Malayalam theatre director Jino Joseph’s latest play to sweep the METAs in April 2018.

Nona, a socio-political satirical play, directed by the acclaimed Malayalam theatre personality, Jino Joseph, is set in rural India and examines pseudo - nationalism and casteism through the story of Govindan, his family and neighbours.

The narrative is about how Govindan’s conniving son Prasanth through his project of an advertisement film about the map of India in his courtyard creates boundaries that change the dynamics of a peaceful and connected community. Ultimately the villagers with the help of Govindan see through the sly motive of Prasanth and fight him back. The play culminates with the villagers rejoicing after wiping out the boundaries created by Prasanth.
