Synopsis:

"We are not makers of history. We are made by history." - Martin Luther King Jr.
"We are shaped by the generations that have gone before us, and writers have a lot to do with our view of ourselves", declares Annie Zaidi. "The role of writers in society is to be truth-tellers". Questions about writers shaping society began consuming Annie while doing research for her edited anthology Unbound: 2,000 years of Indian Women's Writing, reading groundbreaking texts such as RaTrabai Shinde's Stri Purush Tulna and Pandita mabai's The High Caste Hindu Woman. Invited to write on famous wives, these questions simply got more complex. Living in a time of surveillance, this question of truth and how to tell it has become more troubling, more compelling.
We are delighted to invite Annie Zaidi - writer of many genres - to Mumbai Local, to share with us her thoughts on being a writer, why she made the switch from journalism to writing, and how she engages with history and the current social context in her work. Expect to hear new stories, and gain new perspectives on previously heard ones, as she brings to our attention the writers that have slipped out of the mainstream gaze, and look forward to grappling with the critical question of the role of the writer in society.

Bio

Annie Zaidi writes across several genres. She has published a novella, 'Gulab', a collection of short stories, 'Love Stories # 1 to 14', one collection of essays, 'Known Turf: Bantering with Bandits and Other True Tales', which was short-listed for the prestigious Crossword Book Awards. She co-authored The Good Indian Girl (with Smriti Ravindra) and a book of illustrated poems, Crush. She is the editor of 'Unbound: 2000 Years of Indian Women's Writing'.

Her play scripts include 'Jaal' (Hindi) and 'So Many Socks' (English), both of which have been staged in Mumbai and other cities. The latter script was short-listed for the META awards in 2013. Another script, 'Name, Place, Animal, Thing', was short-listed for The Hindu Metroplus Playwright Award in 2009. A radio play, 'Jam', was regional (South Asia) winner for the BBC's International Playwriting Competition 2011.

She has made one documentary film, 'In her Words: The Journey of Indian Women', which traces the lives and struggles of women as reflected in the literature that they have created.

Synopsis:

Coping with difficulty is a life experience all of us will go through multiple times. It's usually a fairly messy process. Leave it to mathematicians however to find a clear, precise, logical way in which to define coping with difficulty, of course, within the realm of mathematics. They look at a series of yet unsolved problems, and ask, which of these is a hard problem, and which is not Then they ask, how can you harness the hardness in your favour? The mathematics they create in the process ends up leading to some amazing real life applications like network security!
We are delighted to invite Prahladh Harsha - theoretical computer scientist - to Mumbai Local, to share with us his work in Theoretical Computer Science, focusing on Coping with Difficulty. This conversation will take us into the beauty of mathematics as a study of patterns and structures, and the fascination of the P versus NP problem for mathematicians, and perhaps, once we understand it, for us as well (if you watch Elementary on Netflix, you might have encountered this problem in one of the episodes, where mathematicians kill to solve this problem!).

Bio:.

Prahladh Harsha is a theoretical computer scientist at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. Prahladh is interested in looking at problems from a computational lens using tools from algebra, analysis and information theory. He obtained his BTech degree in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Madras in 1998 and his PhD in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2004. He has worked at Microsoft Research, Univ. Texas, Austin, TTI Chicago and has been at TIFR since 2010.
