Bombairiya is a one
day story that kicks off with a phone being stolen. Meghna, whose phone it
is, is a PRO to a filmstar and that phone is her life..Or so she thinks!
However, in the 24 hours she spends desperately trying to get it back, she
discovers new people and a new life in a ‘topsy turvy’ world. Her struggle is
set at Christmastime, on 20th December 2016 to be precise. This
is the day the Electoral College confirms Donald Trump as President of the
United States. It is also 43 days since Trump won the vote and 43 days since
Demonetization threw most Indians into complete chaos. Both events made almost
all of us question the world we thought we knew. This is why the makers chose
that day for the backdrop of their movie’s multiple plotlines. That same day,
Michelle Obama is quoted saying “We have begun to feel what not having hope is
like”. In post production, the makers decided to update their story, placing
Donald Trump’s best-selling book ‘The Art of the Deal’ in the hands a character
used to being in control, played by Adil Hussain. Even the ticker tape of
Breaking News, on the TV sets in the film, shows actual news items from 20th December
2016. Because amid all the chaos, the director wanted to paint a world which
does seem devoid of hope for misanthropic Meghna, until she is forced to go on
a journey that takes her outside herself. Whoever may feel like an isolated
stranger, glimpse at least one universal truth in Pia Sukanya’s comedy of
errors; it is those very errors that make us human and connect us all.
